Make something awesome on the web. We support you with knowledge, inspiration and answers to your questions.

To get this out of the way: If you want to reach as many readers as possible, for free and with no technical knowledge, social media might still be the best choice. Be it Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn or the newcomers Threads and Bluesky. But even if you manage to find your audience there, you will soon feel the downsides of today’s social media:

It is entirely the decision of the social network, how your content is displayed, if at all, to whom and in what context. The algorithms and the design might change anytime and you will need to adapt. Some rules remain constant across all social media networks: If you want to get noticed, you need to post very often and your content needs to evoke an immediate emotional response. You will not have a chance to grow your audience with long-form writing, nuanced statements or complex stories. Also, your older content will quickly become obsolete, hard to find or even disappear if the social media company chooses to do so.

There is a better way to publish on the internet that does not rely on other services or companies: Running your own website, from your own webspace, under your own web address. This way you have always full control over your contents and how they are presented. The web is the most universal tool with which you can publish literally any kind of media that runs on our connected devices.

A friendly online community of creative people is already running their own websites, and their number is growing rapidly: Artists, designers, authors, researchers, curators and educators.
They post short and long texts, they blog, debate, show their works and processes, publish all sorts of audiovisual media, interactive experiences and games. They do it independently and under their full control. So join in and start your own web thing!

Unfortunately this freedom requires some effort and technical knowledge. You will need some webspace and an idea of what to do there. There are myriad ways of running a website, but each has its own quirks. Even the established best-practices do not come for free.

The aim of this website is to make publishing your own website fast and fun:

  • Solutions: We show ways to set up a personal website that are easy to follow and future-proof.
  • Links: Helpful resources
  • Website Directory: inspiring examples from the community
  • Software: applications for publishing and browsing the web, open-source, easy to use, future-proof
  • Forum (planned): A helpful place to get in touch, give feedback, find answers and help other.

We draw from many years of web design and development. We express our opinion on technology, but we judge independently. We are not affiliated with any software or company and will not try to sell you anything.
